KENYA—The mission to Kenya represented the part of NYC Medics’ work that focuses on helping local populations expand their healthcare and disaster preparedness training, so as to help local populations sustain themselves and create resiliency post-disaster—in the days and weeks after most other aid organizations have come and gone. NYC Medics traveled to Kenya at the invitation of The Kenya Council of Emergency Medical Technicians (KCEMT), the national body representing emergency medical services practitioners in Kenya, and more than 2000 personnel in basic and advanced professional levels of pre-hospital care. Said Alice Ngure, a trainee: “NYC Medics gave us exactly the training we needed, and was the only type of such training we have gotten. It was one-of-a-kind. Dealing with disasters after they happen is good, but prevention training is also critical. They met and exceeded our expectations”.
